Beach Art Glass

Julie Fountain is the award winning artist behind Beach Art Glass, working from her studio in beautiful Malvern, England, where she has been making and teaching glass beadmaking since 2007. She was first drawn to bead making when she discovered the glass itself, beautiful rods in gleaming jewel colours, just waiting to be melted and combined into new shapes and textures. In 2014 Julie was thrilled to be invited to work with international brand Trollbeads. She is now a Trollbeads Accredited Lamp worker, and can be seen demonstrating for the company at events around the UK.

In November 2015, after a successful first 6 months of trading, Beach Art Glass won the Enterprising Worcestershire Creative Business Award 2015.

Julie is as fascinated by working with molten glass today as she was when she made her first bead and is still thrilled to be able to turn simple rods of glass into beautiful, hard-wearing pieces of wearable art.

She creates each bead by hand using a technique known as lampwork, or flamework – melting and shaping rods of Italian glass in a high temperature flame, first to create the decorative components, then the beads themselves to which she adds fine silver highlights and those intricate handmade details. Later Julie turns these beads into incredibly wearable jewellery using sterling silver findings, most of which are also handmade in the UK.

She also creates unique treats for the home in the form of her gorgeous themed door knobs and light pulls, and hopes to one day enhance this offering with complementary fused glass dishes and decorations.

Jewellery Cleaning

Cleaning your precious memories – Need Help With Your Jewellery Cleaning

Silver

Silver tarnishes under normal conditions coming into contact with the air causes your treasured pieces to turn black.

But no need to worry you can easily return them to their previous glory.

Sometimes a good clean with washing up liquid and a brush will give your jewellery a lift, best not to use soap as this will stick to it and dull the stones.

Silver dip is the easiest way to clean and remove the blackened tarnish, only immerse in the dip if the piece is just silver and has no stones set into it. If you have rings that are set with stones, the best way to clean them is to dip a toothbrush into the liquid and brush the piece. Then rinse in water, and brush again to remove any last pieces of dirt, dry the piece carefully and then polish with a good silver polishing cloth.

When you have jewellery that has darkened areas or is set with crystals ie Marcasite it is best to just use a silver polishing cloth. Always ask your local jeweller if you have any questions about the best way to clean a piece. and you need help with your jewellery cleaning.

Most good jewellers will have silver cleaner in stock that you can purchase.

Gold

Gold doesn’t tarnish like silver, but over time can become dull with contact with household cleaners etc.  It will also get scratched with day to day wearing.

You can improve its shine a little by using a jewellery polishing cloth, but the best way to return its sparkle and shine is to have it polished at your local jewellers.

They will be able to return it to you looking like a brand new piece.

White Gold

Popular white gold needs carefully cleaning so as not to damage the rhodium plating; it is also affected by contact with chlorine. Over time your white gold jewellery may need re-rhodium plating; your local jeweller will be able to help with that.

In the meantime cleaning with mild jewellery cleaner and a soft cloth will help to keep its shine and lustre.

If you are in any doubt about how to clean and look after your precious jewellery collection please go and get advice from your jeweller before attempting to clean it.

Deciding on your budget is an important place to start, this will not only help you but it will also help your jeweller find the right ring for you.

DO YOU KNOW WHAT HER TASTE IN JEWELLERY IS?

Knowing her taste in jewellery will also go a long way in helping you to narrow down your choice – White gold or yellow. Does she like classic pieces or is her taste a bit more alternative.

That special diamond engagement ring choice is likely to be worn everyday every day of married life. So needs to be able to sit well against her wedding ring, so think carefully about the shape and style.

Talk to your jeweller his knowledge with regard to trends and timeless pieces of jewellery will go a long way in helping you to decide.

WHAT JEWELLER DO YOU GO TO?

A good jeweller will be able to help with knowledge about diamonds, and can inform you about the carat colour, clarity, and cut, to help with your choice. And then decide what is most important for you and your intended.
